When You May Have to Use Long-Term Boarding For Your Dog

It’s hard to be away from your dog for a day, even more so for weeks and months. Unfortunately, there may come a time when you won’t have much of a choice. In that case, it’s best to be prepared so you know exactly where you’re going to send your dog while you’re gone.

You may think this does not apply to you as you don’t believe you’ll ever have to send your pup away on a long-term basis at any point. But the future can be unpredictable. Here are some of the most common reasons people send their dog to a kennel for long-term boarding:

Emergency Situations

Unfortunately, you never know quite when an emergency is going to strike or what form it could take. Perhaps you’ll have to leave home for an extended period to take care of a loved one. Maybe you’ll have an ailment of your own or some sort of issue will displace you from your home. In these cases, you may need someone else to take care of your dog on a temporary, but long-term basis.

Physically Inability to Keep Up

Taking care of a dog takes up a lot of time and energy. There may come a time when a person of a certain age suddenly feels like they’re no longer capable of such an effort and there’s no shame in sending your dog to a long-term boarding facility in that case. Of course, there are other cases – hospitalizations, rehabilitation periods – where a senior citizen may send their dog away for a few months to retrieve them later.

Military Assignments

Active-duty members of the military are not given a choice of where they live and work and often have to travel great distances at a moment’s notice. In some cases, they’re not able to bring their canine companion with them. Luckily, there are kennels out there who will offer long-term boarding on an emergency basis.
