What You Don’t (But Should) Know About Teacup Dogs

Tiny, purse-sized pups have become increasingly popular over the past decade. Between all the celebrities that use them as fashion statements and the social media accounts dedicated to their cuteness, teacup dogs seem to be popping up everywhere!

A teacup dog is a miniature version of a breed that’s already small—Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Poodle mixes, etc. Although these pups may take a cute photo, they come with a hoard of issues you need to be aware of if you’re considering adding one to your family.

Most teacup dog breeding techniques are unethical.

Unfortunately, because they sell for so much, some shady breeders will resort to tactics that are risky and unhealthy for both the mother and the puppies to produce a teacup litter. They’ll either inbreed runts to other runts in hopes of rearing smaller puppies or malnourish them to stunt their growth.

Giving birth is hard on a small dog, while inbreeding and underfeeding often lead to a host of health issues that stay with their puppies for life.

There are a lot of health problems related to the size and breeding of a teacup dog.

Unhealthy breeding and insufficient growth, more often than not, result in a shorter life for a teacup dog, and one filled with chronic health conditions. Some of the most common health issues that plague teacup pups include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)—can cause shivering, seizures, and even death if not closely monitored
  • Liver shunts—congenital birth defects that inhibit the liver’s ability to flush out toxins
  • Open fontanelles—soft spots in the skull that don’t close due to stunted growth, leaving dogs more vulnerable to sudden death after trauma
  • Heart & respiratory problems
  • Fragile bones—prone to arthritis

Before adopting any dog, it’s important to do your research and ensure that you are working with a reputable breeder or rescue.
